We operate a state-of-the-art Anaerobic Digestion Facility with an annual processing capacity of 75,000 metric tonnes. Established in 2011, the business produces renewable energy from a combination of food waste and purpose grown energy crops.
Anaerobic Digestion is a natural process whereby bacteria break down organic material in the absence of air yielding a biogas (a mixture of carbon dioxide and methane) and digestate (a nitrogen-rich fertiliser).
A combined heat and power plant (generator) turns the biogas into electricity and heat. The electricity produced is fed directly to a local aluminium smelting company, which is one of the area’s largest employers.
